TORONTO – There may come a time in the next few years when the Houston Astros are a good baseball team. That time, however, is not now and with apologies to the "Its Early" crowd, with whom we typically should all agree hardly removed from opening day, this three-game home set with the Houston Astros is important to the Blue Jays. Nobody is suggesting that, say, if Toronto gets swept its season is over. But a check of the math tells you it doesnt help. The Blue Jays, by virtue of their perch in the American League East, have the unenviable task of playing 76 of their 162 games against their four divisional opponents. They get the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles 19 times each, a veritable meat grinder that can chew up and spit out the hope for a successful season all by itself. Lets say, for the sake of argument, the Blue Jays go 38-38 against their own division. That leaves 86 games against non-divisional opponents. To get to 90 wins, which likely wont be enough to win the division and may or may not be enough to capture one of the two wild card spots, Toronto would have to go 52-34. So far, after splitting a four-game series in Tampa Bay and disappointingly dropping two of three at home to the Yankees, the Jays are 3-4 within the AL East. Houston marks the first non-divisional opponent and due to the make up of the schedule, this is the only time the Astros will visit Toronto all year. It doesnt matter whether its April, June, or the intensity filled months of August and September, Houstons only here once and when they visit the Jays need to make hay. More than anything, manager John Gibbons wants his club to better protect home soil. "Ive always said you cant bury yourself early," said Gibbons. "Especially in this division, its an uphill battle and its real tough to come back. Were trying to get off to a good start and with more games at home itd be nice to finish up good at home. Youve got to play good at home, its no secret. Hold your own on the road and play good baseball at home." JEKYLL AND HYDE ROTATION The biggest question facing the Blue Jays (3-4) heading into the season centred on the starting rotation. Could it hold up in the toughest division in baseball? In the wins, Dr. Jekyll rules the day. When Torontos lost, Mr. Hyde rears his ugly face. Heres a look at the numbers through the first seven games: In the three wins, no runs allowed in 20 2/3 innings pitched. April 1: Drew Hutchison, 5.1 innings pitched.April 2: Mark Buehrle, 8.2 IP.April 5: R.A. Dickey, 6.2 IP. In the four losses, the starts have allowed a staggering 20 earned runs in just 16 innings pitched (11.25 ERA, averaging four innings pitched per start): March 31: R.A. Dickey, 6 earned runs in 5 innings pitched.April 3: Brandon Morrow, 4 ER in 5 IP.April 4: Dustin McGowan, 4 ER in 2.2 IP.April 6: Drew Hutchison, 6 ER in 3.1 IP. ROTATION JUGGLING Mondays off day has afforded manager John Gibbons the opportunity to flip R.A. Dickey and Dustin McGowan, meaning Dickey will start Thursdays series finale against the Astros and McGowan will open a three-game set in Baltimore on Friday night. "Thatll split up Morrow and McGowan," said Gibbons. "The two guys were watching a little bit. Put Dickey in the middle and he can eat some innings, anyway." Dickey has repeatedly said he prefers pitching under a roof, although Gibbons denied the forecasted cool conditions outdoors in Baltimore factored in to the decision. REYES UPDATE Jose Reyes, eligible to come off the disabled list from a strained left hamstring on April 16, ran the treadmill and took ground balls during batting practice on Tuesday afternoon. "Ill know better when I start running and see how Im feeling," said Reyes. "For now, Ill just take it day by day and see what happens." Reyes has been hitting to maintain his batting stroke but still has yet to run at full speed. When Reyes is ready to play, he expects to appear in at least a couple of minor league rehab games before returning to the Blue Jays. JANSSEN UPDATE Casey Janssen, out with an abdominal/back strain, doesnt think hell be ready to come off the disabled list when hes eligible on Sunday. "Probably not," said Janssen. "I dont know the exact date but Ive got to get on a rehab somewhere; hopefully shortly thereafter." Janssen expects only to need one or two minor league rehab games before hes back with the Blue Jays. If he continues to progress, its not unreasonable to expect Janssen to return mid-to-late next week. Gregg Zaun Jersey .C. -- Clemson celebrated a senior class Saturday that brought the program back as a national contender. Donn Pall Jersey . The weekend at Oriole Park has been less kind, with three players suffering varying degrees of injury. The worst ailment of the three, at least optically, is the deep bone bruise suffered by Adam Lind when he fouled a pitch off the top of his right foot in the sixth inning of Saturdays game. https://www.cheapmarlinsjerseys.us/1161 ... rlins.html. Returning to Davis Cup tennis, Federer cruised past Ilija Bozoljac, winning 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in less than two hours. Federer faced little challenge from Bozoljac, who served well but still was no match for his Swiss opponent. Robert Dugger Jersey . Andrew Luck couldnt believe his ears. Colts fans couldnt believe the scoreboard, and the Kansas City Chiefs couldnt believe their incredibly bad luck. Tyler Kinley Jersey . Sociedad remained in sixth place with Villarreal a point behind in seventh, both in Europa League spots and in striking distance of fourth place and the final Champions League berth. Sociedad forward Carlos Vela chipped goalkeeper Jaime Jimenez after receiving an equally exquisite lobbed pass from Ruben Pardo to set him up in the 23rd minute at Anoeta Stadium. DENVER -- The Milwaukee Brewers are on such a roll away from home not even playing imperfect baseball can stop them. Aramis Ramirez homered and drove in two runs, and the Brewers continued their road dominance with a 6-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. It wasnt the prettiest series win for the Brewers, who gave up 19 runs in the three games and allowed 15 hits on Sunday. But they found a way to win all weekend. Now they head back to Milwaukee for a seven-game homestand, including four against Colorado starting Thursday. "We play pretty good at home, too," Ramirez said. "Weve played pretty well on the road but youre always looking forward to go home. We just finished a great road trip and were looking for a great homestand." Milwaukee swept the Rockies to finish 6-1 on a road trip that started in Arizona. The Brewers 27-15 record and .643 winning percentage away from home is the best in the majors. Oakland (.622) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (.615) are the only other teams close to matching Milwaukees success. Kyle Lohse (9-2), who allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings to win consecutive starts for the first time in a month. "It was a great road trip, certainly with the wins," manager Ron Roenicke said. "We made some mistakes, there were plays we didnt make the right way. If we continue to win we have to play cleaner baseball." Colorado couldnt take advantage when Milwaukee was sloppy. The Rockies squandered several scoring opportunities and missed a chance to rally in the ninth when an overthrow led to the first out of the inning. With Milwaukee leading 6-4, Corey Dickerson led off the bottom of the inning with a triple off the wall in right. The throw from the centerfielder Carlos Gomez got past Ramirez at third and Dickerson hesitated before heading down the baseline. He fell halfway to home, giving Ramirez enough time to throw him out at the plate. "He was going to score on that play," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "His legs gave out and he stumbled there between third and home." Wilin Rosario followed with his eighth homer of the season, but Francisco Rodriguez settled down to get his 25th save in 27 chances. "I guess when you are good things go good," Ramirez said, "If that guy doesnt fall, Rosario hits the homer and its a tie ballgame.dddddddddddd." Rodriguez tweaked his left ankle on an earlier pitch to Dickerson but stayed in the game. Ryan Braun also rolled his ankle going back for a ball in right field but kept playing. "Its not serious but I dont know about tomorrow," Roenicke said of Braun. Rosario finished with four hits and had three RBIs for Colorado, which has lost six straight and fell to 6-14 in June. After winning 16 of their first 23 home games the Rockies have lost 10 of 13 at Coors Field, where they have been swept twice in June. Rockies rookie right-hander Tyler Matzek (1-2) was roughed up in the second before setting down 11 straight. He ran into trouble after retiring the first two batters of the fifth and the game tied at 3-3. With runners on first and second, Jonathan Lucroy singled to right, scoring Rickie Weeks from second. Lucroy was caught in a rundown between first and second and Braun was able to score from third to make it 5-3. "Theyre a good-hitting team," Matzek said. "I just tried to pound the zone and just kept leaving it up." The Rockies made it a one-run game in the eighth on Drew Stubbs RBI triple to right but Lyle Overbay led off the ninth with a pinch-hit home run to restore the two-run cushion. Gomez extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a leadoff single in the second and Ramirez followed with a two-run homer, his 10th, to make it 2-0. Consecutive singles put runners on first and third for Milwaukee, and a double-play grounder by Lohse scored Khris Davis to make it 3-0. The Rockies rallied to tie it with a run in the second and two in the third on Rosarios double to right-centre. NOTES: Sundays win was Roenickes 300th as a manager. ... Gomez has reached base in 35 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors. ... Rockies C Michael McKenry will leave the team Monday for a three-day bereavement leave. Jackson Williams will serve as Rosarios backup for the series against St. Louis. ... Rockies RHP Christian Bergman will have an MRI on his left hand Monday, head trainer Keith Dugger said. Bergman still has swelling from getting hit by a line drive on the base of the hand during Fridays start. ... The Rockies recalled RHP Rob Scahill from Triple-A. ' ' '
